Plans for a residential facility for autistic girls in Southern Nevada have stumbled on multiple roadblocks over the past few months, leaving families frustrated.

The project, which was originally approved in mid-2024, was intended to serve girls diagnosed with severe Autism. The idea was to construct a 12-bed home on West Charleston and Jones boulevards for ASD girls who cannot be placed in foster care.

For starters, the original budget was $3.8 million. It was a simple plan to construct an autism facility on a specific piece of land with a fixed budget. But things went south when the government approved a larger project called “Campus for Hope”. This very project needed the same land that the Autism facility had secured.  The original Autism facility construction that had started was demolished, and the team had to look for a new location.

Rising Costs and Expanding Scope

Six months later, estimates for the girls’ facility jumped to $7.5 million. Reports state that these estimates have arisen from multiple failed attempts to secure an alternative location.  The price tag has surged to $17.5 million.

Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager (D-Las Vegas) has expressed his disappointment, stating that “Every time this project has been presented, it’s always a different story, sometimes a different building, and sometimes a different cost.”

Why the Costs Are Increasing

However, Jack Robb, the Chief Innovation Officer for the Governor’s Office, has countered that the rising costs simply reflect a higher quality of care, including 24-hour support, health monitoring, and rehabilitation for residents. In an interview, he stated, “Things have to change to meet federal and license requirements.”

He also explained that past failed attempts to secure private contractors or alternative sites were due to capacity or logistical challenges. However, construction is expected to start on April 1, with contracts finalized in March.

Families Feeling the Strain

While all this is unraveling, many families of the girls eligible for the facility have faced delays that are emotionally taxing. One parent even gave her 2 cents, “We just want a safe, supportive place for our daughters. Waiting for years with no updates is heartbreaking.”

At Nevada Autism, we continue to offer support to families navigating these uncertainties. We major in providing guidance on care options, therapy programs, and even Autism advocacy.
