Jacob Anderson, an 18-year-old from Las Vegas, walked across the stage at Spring Valley High School on May 22 to receive his diploma. Diagnosed with autism at a young age, he faced leukemia at age 7 and epilepsy at age 13.
His mother, Kendra Briggs, said there were many moments when she wondered if this day would ever come.
Jacob did not speak until he was 7. Then came the leukemia diagnosis, with symptoms like constant nosebleeds and vomiting blood. He received treatment and many blood transfusions at Summerlin Hospital before becoming cancer-free.
When Jacob turned 13, he had a seizure out of the blue, and that’s when doctors said he had epilepsy. Even then, his family stuck by his side, always focused on helping him grow.
Jacob’s story genuinely demonstrates how families dig deep and find strength when they’re dealing with both autism and tough medical problems for a loved one. Kendra admits she’s still figuring things out as a parent; it’s a learning curve that never really ends.
She wants other families with young kids facing the same kinds of challenges to take heart from their experience.
A Message of Hope for Autism Families
Kendra wants parents to know that progress is possible, even when it comes slowly. “It is possible, and they can graduate,” she said.
Jacob, who loves airplanes, was smiling widely on graduation day. He told reporters simply, “I’m happy!”
Looking Ahead to Future Goals
Jacob plans to keep building life and job skills through specialized programs. He will continue attending Spring Valley High School for the next four years as part of those services.
