It’s been almost two and a half years since Seth Rogers’ 15-year-old autistic son, Sebastian Wayne Drake Rogers, disappeared from their home in Hendersonville, Tennessee. The pain hasn’t eased one bit. Now, Seth has taken the incredibly difficult step of filing a lawsuit against county and state agencies, along with several officials.
Sebastian went missing back in February 2024. Since that day, not knowing where he is or what happened has haunted the whole family. It’s the kind of ongoing heartbreak no parent should ever have to face.
When Something Like This Hits Home for Autism Families
Stories like Sebastian’s break your heart no matter who you are. But for families raising autistic kids, they hit especially hard. When your child has difficulty communicating, the fear of them going missing is real. You lie awake at night worrying about their safety, wondering if systems out there will actually step up when it matters most.
The numbers paint a pretty sobering picture. Research shows that nearly half of kids on the autism spectrum will wander off or elope at some point. Over ten years, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children heard about more than 1,500 autistic children reported missing. A lot get found, thankfully, but the risks are real. Consider an incident like drowning, which stands out as one of the biggest dangers, especially for younger kids or those who are non-verbal.
In day-to-day life, families dealing with autism often live with this extra layer of constant watchfulness. You double-check locks, teach safety skills over and over, and try to prepare for the unexpected.
It can feel like the authorities or agencies just don’t move fast enough—or respond in a way that truly gets how autistic folks might act in the middle of a crisis. They don’t always react like other people would to search teams or strangers trying to lend a hand.
That’s exactly why this lawsuit feels so important. It’s calling out the real need for better training, quicker responses, and genuine support. That way, these heartbreaking situations don’t keep happening over and over.
It’s not just about one family. It’s about pushing society and systems to do better for autistic people and the loved ones who care for them every single day.
