Families in Elko County who need autism services are running into waits that can last more than a year. Local providers are short-staffed and facing low Medicaid reimbursement rates.

Elko County Commissioners recently agreed to write a letter supporting Nevada Behavior and Autism. The letter highlights the problems and asks the state for help.

Workforce Strain and Growing Demand

Nevada Behavior and Autism has lost about 20 percent of its workforce. Leaders say they have tried hard to hire and keep Registered Behavior Technicians, but staff keeps leaving. Because of the shortage, many children wait more than a year for services at both providers in the county.

One leader pointed out that a lot of families in Elko County want to start therapy but simply cannot get in right away.

Why Early Support Matters

Researchers have proven how helpful Applied Behavior Analysis therapy and early intervention can be.

When young children get the right support early, they often pick up skills that make school, home life, and community life easier. Waiting too long can make it harder for kids to build those skills during key developmental stages.

The organization also offers in-home and school-based services in places like Spring Creek, Carlin, Wells, and West Wendover, so care reaches beyond just the Elko center.

Rural Challenges and Reimbursement Gaps

Working in rural areas adds extra costs. Driving from the Elko center to other towns takes time and money, but Medicaid doesn’t cover that travel. Leaders also noted that Nevada’s hourly rates for some services are lower than in nearby Utah, making it harder to attract and retain good staff.

The county’s letter of support aims to highlight these issues and push for better reimbursement rates and stronger workforce-building efforts.

When Waiting Feels Too Long

It is hard for families to know their child could benefit from therapy and still have to wait months to start. Regular support helps kids build communication skills, handle everyday challenges, and feel more confident over time.
