If you are a parent or caregiver of an individual with autism, planning and organizing a trip can indeed be a tricky task to undertake, as most Autistic children get overwhelmed by excessive sensory stimulation – the fear of the unknown looms large at the airport, the noise levels on the flight, and anxiety of relocating to a new environment all contribute to this overwhelming feeling.

Nearly 78% of families whose loved ones are on the autism spectrum are often apprehensive about traveling through an airline. Also, comprehensive research conducted by AutismTravel.com has brought to light that approximately 94% of the affected families are likely to embark on vacations if only they were tailored towards accommodating their loved one diagnosed with autism.

Emirates Airlines – Dubai has taken a step forward

In response to this problem, Emirates Airline Dubai has taken a step forward by implementing the “Autism and Hidden Disabilities” training, which has been completed by 23,000 of its staff members. Building on this foundation, Emirates has introduced a more comprehensive curriculum that equips its staff with the necessary insights to understand and assist individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities.

Emirates has invested in new sensory-friendly products such as fidget tools and other aids to reduce stress and promote relaxation during flights, making travel more accessible for neurodiverse individuals. When these services are rolled out in 2025, Emirates aims to provide a seamless and inclusive travel experience for all passengers.

Emirates collaboration with IBCCES

It has also collaborated with IBCCES to conduct thorough evaluations and assessments involving surveys, interviews, and audits across both short—and long-haul flight routes. IBCCES will help develop new and improved standards for creating a more accommodating and comfortable travel experience for those with autism.

It’s an Initiative that is in line with Dubai’s overall commitment to promoting accessibility. Dubai International Airport was the first airport in the world to receive the Certified Autism Center designation, and Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism has set a goal to become the first Certified Autism Destination™ in the Eastern Hemisphere.
