For adults with autism and their families, finding resources after high school can almost feel like navigating a maze.
It’s the very experience that Janette Reyes-Speer and her husband experienced when their daughter, Alina, turned 18.
Alina originally had been diagnosed as autistic at age four, and as with any special needs child, had been depending on support. However, as she crossed 18, she suddenly faced a world where many specialized supports disappeared.
In an interview, her mom, Reyes, states her frustration: “It was probably the hardest news my husband and I ever received.”
“We didn’t know where to turn. Our desire was to support Alina so she could be an active community member, so she could continue learning, and even work, but things made it so difficult.”
It’s worth mentioning that currently, in Clark County, students with disabilities have access to specialized programs. The problem is that these supports are often withdrawn at age 18, leaving many families without help or guidance.
Autism Cares Nevada Hosts Resource Fair
On Saturday, March 21, Autism Cares Nevada hosted a resource fair at Las Vegas City Hall, featuring 60 vendors providing services for adults with autism.
Jan Bellinghausen, who is the co-chair of Autism Cares Nevada, said families frequently reach out to the organization for guidance.
“Families are often looking for the next step of how to establish guardianship, find employment opportunities for their loved ones, or connect with health and community programs,” Bellinghausen said. “This fair gives them a place to find answers in one location.”
The event showcased a variety of programs, including vocational training, therapy services, housing assistance, and social integration opportunities, all designed to help adults with autism continue to grow and thrive in the community.
Navigating Life After High School
The transition from adolescence to adulthood for special needs children can be daunting. And without proper guidance, the path forward is unclear, and opportunities for meaningful engagement in work often go missed.
“The fair made a huge difference for us,” Reyes-Speer said. “We learned about services we didn’t even know existed, and it gave Alina hope for her future.”
