A new children’s book by Las Vegas artist and author Juan Munoz aims to give autistic kids a character who feels like them. Arty the Autistic Artistic Turtle follows a turtle who is completely absorbed by art. His friends have their own deep passions too: dinosaurs, music, and more. The story celebrates those intense interests instead of treating them as something to fix.
Munoz, who is on the autism spectrum himself, says he wanted kids to know their differences are what make them exactly who they need to be. He hopes the book helps them feel proud of the things they love most.
Why Representation Matters
Many autistic children grow up without seeing characters who share their way of experiencing the world. Munoz remembers needing stories like this when he was young and not finding them. Through Arty, he wants to show that being deeply focused on something, whether it is art, trains, animals, or numbers, is a strength worth celebrating.
The book debuts on September 12. Munoz has already written four children’s books that are available on Amazon. He is also working on Spanish-language versions so more families can access the stories.
A Local Event to Share the Message
Munoz will appear at an event with FEAT of Southern Nevada on September 12 at the World Market Center. The gathering will include book readings and a silent art auction. He hopes the books eventually reach more classrooms and school libraries across Clark County.
