As children plan to resume school in the coming season, many families face the familiar whirlwind of new schedules, supply lists, and shifting routines. For parents of autistic children, the change can feel even bigger. New teachers, different classrooms, altered wake-up times, and sensory demands often require extra planning, patience, and clear visual support.
Makayla Kelley, a marketing professional, recent MBA graduate, photographer, and mother of three from Kentucky, knows this season well. As an Autism Speaks Champion of Change and parent of children with both Level 1 and Level 3 autism, she has learned that starting early makes a real difference.
Starting Before the First Bell
Kelley emphasizes that waiting until the week before school begins is often too late. Gradual shifts in bedtime and morning routines two or more weeks ahead help the body and mind adjust. Visual calendars that count down the days, photos of the new classroom or teacher, and simple social stories about what the first day will look like give children a sense of predictability.
Visiting the school when it is quiet, walking the halls, and practicing the drop-off routine can also lower anxiety. Small choices, such as picking a new backpack or lunchbox, give children a feeling of control during a time that can otherwise feel overwhelming.
Building Steady Routines at Home
Consistency at home supports consistency at school. Clear morning and evening sequences, visual schedules, and calm transition cues help children move from one activity to the next with less stress. Kelley notes that these tools are not about rigid perfection. They create enough structure that the child feels safer when the larger environment changes.
Support That Meets Children Where They Are
Every autistic child experiences transitions differently. What works for one may need adjusting for another. The goal is not to eliminate all challenges but to reduce unnecessary stress so children can focus on learning, friendships, and growth.
At Nevada Autism, we partner with families to build exactly these kinds of practical skills. Through individualized ABA therapy, we help children strengthen communication, emotional regulation, and daily independence while respecting their unique needs and strengths. We walk alongside parents so the strategies used at home and in therapy can support smoother school days.
