For most people, diet and nutrition are seen as important factors for weight management – at least for the majority of people. However, parents whose loved ones have been diagnosed with autism know that diet plays a pivotal role in managing symptoms and behaviors associated with the disorder.

In fact, research has shown a strong link between the gut and the brain, indicating that the distribution of microbiota in the gut can significantly impact behavior, mood, and stress.

A unique approach to meeting dietary needs

This is why the Collins Lake Autism Center takes a unique approach to meeting the dietary needs of its residents and staff. Unlike other ranches, it understands the importance of catering to specific dietary requirements, especially for individuals with disabilities.

One of their approaches includes having a vegetable garden where clients can actively participate in growing their own food, promoting a sense of independence and self-sufficiency. This not only provides residents with fresh and nutritious produce but also gives them a sense of pride and accomplishment through tending to their crops. Tomatoes are always a popular choice among the residents, often being enjoyed straight with other meals.

First attempt at growing

Their first attempt at growing was challenged, though. Unpredictable weather conditions, pests, and other factors, such as gophers and crickets, posed obstacles. However, after years of trial and error, the team discovered solutions using a new 20′ x 100′ hoop house and raised beds.

In addition to growing their own food, they are now looking to hire a full-time cook who will prepare meals for the staff and prioritize healthy cooking methods and ingredients. According to the team, there is no point in growing their vegetables if they are not utilized healthily and beneficially.

The cook will work closely with the master gardener to plan meals that incorporate fresh produce from the garden, ensuring a balance between food production and consumption within the organization. As they strive towards self-sufficiency, this addition will further enhance their efforts and bring them one step closer to their goal of promoting a sustainable and holistic lifestyle.

Disability initiatives

We at Nevada Autism are happy to see these inclusive disability initiatives being implemented and believe that they set a great example for other organizations in the community. Not only does it benefit their clients, but it also inspires others to adopt similar practices. We hope that more organizations will follow in their footsteps and work towards incorporating sustainable practices into their operations.
