If you’re always on the lookout for the latest news and trends, you may have come across the growing concern of rising numbers of children being diagnosed with autism. For those who might be a little lost, autism is a developmental disorder that affects a person’s communication abilities and sensory experiences.
A few symptoms, for example, among children are difficulty socializing and painful sensory responses, especially in loud environments or even to certain textures and colors.
The Bad Impact of ASD on Children
These can greatly affect a child’s school experience, causing more deterioration in their self-esteem & overall mental health. In adults, this has impacted employment opportunities and social interactions of ASD adults because most employers and bosses are either unaware of Autism or they are aware but have no knowledge of its effects on a person’s behavior and capabilities. Because there is no cure as of now and scientists are still studying the causes, it’s highly recommended that parents who may have suspicions regarding their child’s behavior or growth get them checked by doctors as early as possible.
The doctor will run specific behavioral and cognitive tests, family background, and sometimes even DNA tests to diagnose if the child has Autism. This simple act can genuinely have an invaluable lifelong effect on the child’s development. It makes therapy more long-lasting than waiting for the child to get older and start them on treatment. However, in some regions like Southern Nevada, families may have to tackle long wait times before their children can receive proper diagnoses and therapies for ASD. This is a concerning issue as early intervention has been proven to significantly improve the overall quality of life for individuals with autism.
MGM Resorts International – Autism Support
But thank goodness there is some big organization founded by parents of ASD children who understand the gravity of this situation. Again, there are goodwill organizations that stand for something and fund developmental programs that ultimately help children with ASD. One such example is MGM Resorts International, which has generously contributed to UNLV’s College of Education to enhance the number of Board Certified Behavior Analysts available to assist children with ASD and their families. This funding will go towards developing new programs to increase access to qualified professionals for those in need.
MGM partnered with Grant a Gift Autism to accomplish this. Through this collaboration, future practitioners hope to gain diverse experiences in multiple community settings, including the Ackerman Center, UNLV/CSUN Preschool, UNLV’s CREW Disability Center, and telehealth services.
