Summer is here with us and nothing conveys this season better than the abundance of sunshine, vibrant outdoor activities, and the vigorous energy that comes with longer days. Families relish this time, whether visiting local parks, hosting barbecues, or even finding unique ways to incorporate winter holidays.

Children with ASD on the other hand can enjoy numerous Sensory-friendly events, therapeutic summer camps, and individualized play strategies can make summer an inclusive and enjoyable time for all children.

Goodwill of Southern Nevada

This summer, the Goodwill of Southern Nevada undertook an initiative that made a significant impact on the local community. For those hearing about it for the first time, Goodwill of Southern Nevada is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing job placement and training services to those in need, while also championing various charitable initiatives.

This Friday morning, the organization welcomed children from three different non-profit groups to participate in the third-annual Christmas in July Shopping Spree. Held at the bustling Goodwill store on Lake Mead Boulevard in North Las Vegas, the event was a heartwarming affair.

The event

Families and children gathered with eager anticipation, each child receiving a generous $100 gift card to indulge in a shopping experience specially curated for them.  This tradition was conceived as a direct response to the unprecedented hardships imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the aim of uplifting and supporting the community through challenging times.

Although things have resumed to a semblance of normalcy in Southern Nevada after COVID, there are still numerous families that may need assistance. And with this initiative, Goodwill hopes to extend a hand to those still struggling to regain their footing.

ASD challenge

The rates of ASD have surged, putting additional strain on affected families who require specialized support and resources. Navigating these complexities often demands substantial financial and emotional investment, highlighting the crucial role that organizations like Goodwill play in providing essential aid.

By addressing both economic and health-related needs, Goodwill aspires to create a more inclusive and supportive community, ensuring that every family can access the resources needed to thrive.
