On Friday, November 14th, Goodwill of Southern Nevada hosted its annual Holiday Shopping Spree event at its Henderson store. During this year’s event, over 100 local children benefited from the generosity of three main nonprofits: Families for Effective Autism Treatment, Foster Kinship, and Speedway Children’s Charities.
This is a massive improvement from last year’s event, which was served by five local nonprofits. During last year’s event, only fifty children received gift cards and enjoyed the shopping spree experience.
During this annual event, the children receive $100 Goodwill gift cards to spend as they see fit inside the store. Santa Claus typically arrives at the store first in an iconic Henderson Fire Department engine to greet all the children. The Henderson Fire and Police Departments both volunteer at the event and support the children as they shop through the store. The Departments also use these events as opportunities to build community partnerships and connect with residents.
With $100 to spend throughout the store, most children and families get a much-needed boost to help them get through the holiday season. This year’s event is especially significant with the recent uncertainty surrounding SNAP benefits and food stamps.
According to program organizers, this event was first created during the pandemic. During those extremely uncertain times, the Holiday Shopping Spree helped tons of families in the community make ends meet.
If you or someone you know could benefit from these types of events, then it’s good to know that the Goodwill of Southern Nevada hosts another similar event during the summer. They call this event Christmas in July.
