KultureCity has partnered with Lush Cosmetics to create a sensory-inclusive shopping experience in retail stores. So far, 25 of Lush’s shops have launched a pilot program to meet customers where they are instead of making assumptions about what they want and need. This pilot program includes training and certifying staff, empowering employees to meet the needs of individuals with sensory disabilities, and providing sensory bags to customers in need.

Prior to this partnership, Lush Cosmetics wasn’t connecting well with the vast community of individuals with sensory needs. A recent survey of Lush’s staff revealed that half of the respondents (55%) are neurodiverse, disabled, or living with a chronic illness. Lush’s shops are often bright, loud, and filled with a variety of scents, which all make the stores seem uninviting to those who get overwhelmed easily. With a few changes, Lush Cosmetics can close the gap and become a much more inclusive environment. For one, Lush’s stores typically have “try me” products that allow customers to try products for themselves. Since this policy is already in place, there is ample room to create new pathways for customers with specific sensory needs to try out products in a way that works best for them.

For another, Lush could take tips from KultureCity’s sensory bags. These bags are provided upon request from customers. They include noise-cancelling headphones, fidget tools, strobe-reducing glasses, and an emotions-cue card that customers can use when they prefer non-verbal communication. For individuals who find the smells overwhelming, masks are available.

One of the most important takeaways that Lush will implement is reframing neurodiversity as a strength and working towards empowering every customer to have the best possible shopping experience.

This partnership was launched when one of Lush’s influential employees visited Las Vegas. Feeling very overwhelmed with the sounds, smells, and lights in the city, he ducked into KultureCity. There, he was met with a quiet, cool, and dark room where he was able to rest and recharge. The experience was life changing for the employee, who immediately wanted to bring what he learned at KultureCity to his own business, Lush.
