Thanks to a generous gift from Jan Marson, a founding member of the University Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment (UCAN), a new research role has been established at UCAN that will focus on analyzing over 20 years’ worth of autism data.
UCAN is located within the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med). UCAN has been in a long-term partnership with the Nevada Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities Program (NvLEND) and the Nevada Center for Excellence in Disabilities (NCED). Together, these organizations have been leading the way in providing diagnostic evaluations and support for children and young adults struggling with neurodevelopmental disorders.
UCAN’s team is made up of pediatricians, psychiatrists, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and other specialists. This new dedicated researcher role will help provide important insights to drive the organization’s programs and goals. The conclusions drawn from the research will be used to develop more personalized therapies and better support systems. The main goal is to help autistic individuals live fulfilling lives.
Graduate students from the school’s Speech Pathology and Audiology program will have the opportunity to participate in research if they choose, which will help them gain invaluable experience that will contribute to their educational goals and future careers. This important feature will help UCAN shape the next generation of autism specialists working in the field.
On April 10th the UNR Med participated in Giving Day, a fundraising event. UCAN was one of UNR Med’s key funding priorities, so donations directly supported the facility’s mission to improve autism research, enhance existing services, and provide more resources for families in Nevada.
Do You Have an Autistic Child in Nevada?
Do you currently reside in Nevada and have an autistic child? Are you interested in getting additional autism support for your child and family?
Here at the Nevada Autism Center, our facility seeks to empower your child’s future by helping them become more independent, shed maladaptive behaviors, gain new coping strategies, and become more prepared to handle social situations, like school.
Our facility achieves this by using proven ABA therapy methods in a one-on-one setting. We also help your child work through social skills in real but controlled social settings. For instance, we give children the opportunity to interact in model classrooms that mimic real school. We use sensory items and work to incorporate your child’s favorite reinforcers to prepare them for real school.
Since we know how critical the family’s involvement is, we will also actively work on helping to provide guidance to all family members interested in learning how to support their autistic loved one.
By working with us, your child will have access to greater support in a structured environment. Even better, they’ll have more opportunities for social development and possibly even develop like-minded friends.
