It’s an absolutely inspiring week as the Indiana ACT for Families coalition spotlights Natasha Navas of Westfield. She is a spectacular mommy to a six-year-old kid diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and has been motivated to become a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT).
Having seen firsthand the magical progress her little one achieved via Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, Natasha was determined to set out on a journey to ensure she could help other families achieve the same goals through RBT.
About her child’s autism diagnosis
It all began on a typical day when Natasha took her 2-year-old son to the Doctor’s office for a checkup. Natasha was taken aback when the Doctor mentioned signs of autism; It was like hearing massive news all at once! Natasha was understandably overwhelmed. But soon, she started researching the best way to help her son and went with ABA therapy.
Unfortunately, these services weren’t readily available in Los Angeles, Calif., where Natasha lived. To ensure her son gets the best services, she packed up and moved to Westfield, where a great ABA center was conveniently located just 15 minutes away. Natasha was determined and courageous in finding what her son needed.
Navas’ son’s transformation
Navas’ son’s transformation was impressive – he went from being utterly nonverbal to being able to functionally communicate within a few short months of starting ABA therapy.
“We began with around 10 words, and now he’s actually producing sentences, as he demonstrated yesterday with his therapist by telling her that he had an earache,” she said.
She also emphasized that ABA had impacted her family positively. For example, they can now go to the grocery shop together, and during the weekend or holidays, they can hang out and eat at restaurants.
Nava’s Goal
Having witnessed the success of her son’s ABA therapy, Navas was motivated to launch a career in this field to help other families like hers. She says she wanted to give other families the same quality therapy her son received. With that goal, she resorted to pursuing RBT. Ever since, she has gained professional insight into helping her son be more independent and successful academically and socially.
