If you have an autistic loved one who struggles with verbal communication, then you’ll want to learn more about Leucovorin, a long-standing drug often used for chemotherapy.

Recent reports and studies seem to suggest that the folinic acid-based drug might be effective in improving speech in some autistic individuals. Right now, the drug has not yet been approved by the FDA to treat autism, but steps have been taken to approve the drug to treat symptoms in children with Cerebral Folate Deficiency, which is very closely associated with autism.

These positive reports have led many to wonder if a lack of folic acid could be contributing to the nonverbal symptoms that commonly appear with autism. When looking at past studies, there does appear to be a strong correlation between children who have folate receptor autoantibodies (FRAA) and children who are diagnosed with autism. While the link isn’t entirely clear, many past studies also show that high-dose folinic acid has proven effective in improving verbal communication in autistic youth with FRAA. FRAA blocks folate from entering the brain, and it’s been scientifically proven that a lack of folate in the brain does cause developmental and verbal issues. A lack of folate has been directly linked to delayed speech and language difficulties in children with Cerebral Folate Deficiency.

These recent reports and studies suggest that if you have a folic acid deficiency or FRAA, Leucovorin may be a suitable supplement. Once an autistic individual’s brain is better able to receive folinic acid, improvements are seen rapidly.

Keep in mind that all of these studies have shown correlations and links, but we have yet to see a large-scale study that specifically focuses on Leucovorin and autistic children. More research is needed, and public reports about the success of the drug are sure to prompt researchers to get started.
