While the average neurotypical child might be thrilled and excited about summer vacation, all the changes in routines and people can be very overwhelming for children on the autism spectrum. Often, the influx of sudden changes can cause shutdowns or meltdowns.

If you currently have a neurodivergent child gearing up for summer, then you might benefit from the tips shared by experts from the Touro University Nevada’s Pierce Autism Center. Most importantly, these experts recommend planning ahead for the new school year and utilizing the summer months to establish new or more efficient routines. For instance, parents can use the 11 weeks of summer to help their child become more independent in dressing themselves or brushing their teeth on their own. These skills will prove extremely useful once school starts again.

Another tip experts recommend is to continue maintaining a schedule in the summer. It’s tempting to stay up late and sleep in during the summer, but the familiarity of a routine helps an autistic child feel grounded enough to handle other changes, like not going to school every day.

Experts also suggest utilizing the summer to spend quality time with your child, as the school year doesn’t always provide a lot of time for families to enjoy each other’s company. Focus on helping your little one grow and learn, and you’re sure to have a fun and productive summer.

Does Your Autistic Loved One Need Additional Support?

One great strategy to employ during the summer is to give your autistic loved one the additional support they need to really thrive in the upcoming year. Here at the Nevada Autism Center, our goal is to empower your child’s future by helping them become the most independent and autonomous version of themselves that they can.

We can help your child by providing ABA therapy, family guidance, and model classrooms. These model classrooms will give your child the opportunity to get more comfortable with a school setting, providing invaluable benefits for the school year to come. We also offer summer camps that focus specifically on school readiness. We offer community support and the socialization your child needs to develop prosocial, adaptive skills they’ll need to thrive through the school year.

We can provide the structured environment and services your loved one needs, but on top of that, we also offer an inclusive, accepting community. Autistic children and their families are at high risk of isolating themselves due to not being accepted or understood by the majority of society. When you join our family here at the Nevada Autism Center, we strive to ensure you feel safe and accepted.

Our facility currently accepts Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, ATAP, Health Plan of Nevada, UMR, Evernorth, United Healthcare, and Sierra Health and Life. Sadly, the facility is currently unable to accept patients who plan on paying using Medicaid services.
