It’s another year, and April is here, which means it’s time to demonstrate support to the autism community & create awareness of autism-related issues. This annual event has been celebrated for nearly five decades now. It reunites individuals worldwide to raise awareness and deepen understanding of Autism while also focusing on how we can best support individuals with Autism and their families.
For those unfamiliar with Autism, it is a neuro disorder that impacts how an individual interacts with the world and communicates. Autism presents differently in every person but often includes challenges with social interaction and communication, as well as repetitive behaviors or difficulty adapting to change.
How to show support
As World Autism Awareness Month is a global initiative, you can show your support and help create awareness in many ways. Here are some ideas:
- Educate yourself about Autism, then share the Information with friends through Social Media.
- Participate in activities that will directly benefit individuals with Autism, such as volunteering or donating to a charity.
- Show your support by changing the colors of social media profile pictures to blue or wearing an autism awareness ribbon.
- Encourage businesses, schools, and other organizations to be more aware of Autism and introduce new methods to help individuals with Autism better access services or participate in activities.
- Participate in virtual events held by organizations dedicated to raising awareness about Autism.
- Talk with family and friends, or anyone who will listen, about the importance of understanding and supporting individuals with Autism.
Office Activities to promote Awareness
For employers and Managers, this doesn’t have to be something complicated to be accomplished. At first, it may seem hard to actualize. However, with a few steps, you can easily plan an Autism awareness this month. For example, you can use this opportunity to inform and educate your employees about Autism. You can do this by sending emails, bringing speakers to your office, or video conference calls with professionals about Autism.
You can also recognize and acknowledge the accomplishments of your Autistic staff. It’s essential to let Autistic employees know their achievements are appreciated, especially during this month.
You can also demonstrate your support by donating to a local charity or any organization that supports Autistics, like Nevada Autism. Doing so will help these organizations continue the work they do in supporting those with Autism.
