National Sons Day, coming up on Sunday, September 28, is more than just a date on the calendar. It’s an opportunity to highlight the positive role young men play in their families and communities. Here in Southern Nevada, the Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) shows how decisive that role can be when sons and mothers come together with a shared purpose.
Mothers and Sons Serving Together
The Young Men’s Service League is a national nonprofit that brings together high school-aged boys and their mothers for four years of service, leadership training, and personal growth. The Las Vegas chapter, founded in 2012, has grown into a community force with 159 mothers and sons representing 20 high schools across Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and Summerlin.
Through 24 community partnerships, members dedicate time and energy to causes ranging from food insecurity and children’s health to disability support. Local partners include Catholic Charities, DISCOVERY Children’s Museum, Ronald McDonald House, Three Square, Spread the Word Nevada, and Families for Effective Autism Treatment (F.E.A.T.) of Southern Nevada. This initiative enables families to contribute while also highlighting significant matters, including raising awareness for autism and providing support for those with developmental challenges.
Leadership, Life Skills, and Connection
YMSL focuses not only on completing service hours but also on developing character. Each young participant assumes leadership positions within the organization, honing skills in teamwork, accountability, and public speaking. Monthly gatherings address essential life skills and conversations that equip them for adult life.
Mothers also play an active part. They serve on committees, mentor younger members, and model the value of compassion and community engagement.
As Chantal Lobo, president of the Las Vegas chapter, explains:
“In a world where it’s easy for young people to feel disconnected, YMSL provides a meaningful way for mothers and sons to grow closer while serving others. It strengthens relationships at home while building stronger communities.”
Why Programs Like YMSL Matter
The heart of YMSL’s mission is building a “service mindset” that lasts a lifetime. For families impacted by autism and other challenges, organizations like YMSL and its community partners show young people the importance of empathy and inclusion. Service projects that involve autism-related organizations — like F.E.A.T.
This kind of community involvement teaches sons that leadership is not just about achievement but about compassion, understanding, and the willingness to step forward for others.
