Work is something many individuals may take for granted in their daily lives, however, for people with disabilities, the process of obtaining and maintaining employment can be a daunting task due to the existing barriers within the system and from potential employers.

Bean Dreaming

It’s great that there are some  businesses, such as Bean Dreaming, who are actively working towards breaking down these barriers and providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities to showcase their capabilities and contribute to the workforce.

In case you haven’t heard of them, Bean Dreaming is a mobile coffee truck that not only serves delicious drinks, but also employs individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It truly makes ASD workers feel seen and appreciated.

SOS Care

This initiative results from the efforts of SOS Care, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing services and support for children and adults with Autism and other intellectual disabilities. Specifically, it trains individuals for the barista role and also offers guidance and support throughout their employment journey.

One of the interns, Gentleman, a nineteen-year-old, and his colleague Anthony Andrea, aged 22, have already mastered the art of making a variety of coffee beverages, from classic espressos to refreshing iced coffees. In addition to honing their coffee-making skills, they have also learned valuable teamwork and customer service lessons. Andrea expresses his passion for the job by saying, “I enjoy not only creating delicious coffee but also selling it to customers.”

Acceptance of individuals with disabilities in our workplace

Coordinator Adam Law shares his joy in seeing these interns thrive in their new roles and notes the positive impact it has on the community as well. He states, “It’s truly inspiring to witness the empowerment and acceptance of individuals with disabilities in our workplace.

The most gratifying aspect is seeing their confidence grow as they overcome challenges and prove they are capable of anything.” Moreover, not only do these interns impress customers with their professional work ethic and ability to handle stress, but they also serve as a reminder that everyone deserves equal employment opportunities regardless of any disability.

We would like to extend a special thanks to Bean Dreaming Café and its team for their dedication and commitment to providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities. We also want to appreciate the efforts of the SOS Care program in collaborating with local businesses to create an inclusive and diverse workplace. This is a shining example of how inclusive hiring practices benefit the individual and contribute to building a more accepting and understanding community.

Autism Advocates in Las Vegas

In the state, there are currently around 1 in 36 children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Early diagnosis is crucial in helping these individuals receive the necessary support and services for their unique needs.

This is where organizations like Nevada Autism Center come in, providing resources, education, and advocacy for families affected by ASD. Through early diagnosis, individuals with ASD can access interventions and therapies that promote skill development and improve quality of life.
