If you’re an avid fan of movies, especially those of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, then you probably know who Didi Conn is. She is a remarkable actress, producer and writer in the entertainment industry for several decades. Many may not know this, but the actress has undergone a lot of challenges for her son. As a mother, she was not able to hold her child during his infancy because she had to endure the loss of not only one but three of her loved ones – her friend, mother, and father, who all fell victim to the same devastating illness. Earlier in life, before all this, things were bleak, and she even wedded her co-star husband in 1975.

At the Age of 3

Now, years later, she is happily married to an accomplished composer, David Shire. Together, they adopted a son named Daniel, who is lovingly referred to as Danny by his family and friends. At the age of 3 their adopted child, Danny was diagnosed with autism. This required Didi to step away from her acting career in order to provide constant care and support for her son. And in case you didn’t know, Danny is a very special boy with extreme sensitivity to sound. As such, he requires continuous supervision. The actress recalls how much difficulty her son had difficulty with verbal communication and how this would build to his outbursts and fits of frustration.

Cherished moments

She also explains that at first, Danny was able to utter a few words fairly, but over time, his speech regressed completely. This is a common occurrence for individuals with this condition.  Didi also mentions how, unfortunately, she chose to shoulder this burden alone without reaching out to her friends for assistance.

Even with her partner Danny, she made a conscious decision not to share the difficulties they were facing together. This lack of communication and support from others made things increasingly hard. But despite the struggles, Didi has not lost an ounce of love for her son. In fact, one of her most cherished moments was when she heard Danny utter his first full words, “I love you,” at the age of 26.

The mother could only shed tears, and her son worried about what was wrong. She explained to him that they were tears of Joy. Didi Conn had never been able to hold him; he was too sensitive and did not like physical contact. So, this particular moment when Danny willingly expressed his love was something truly special and emotional for her. As she shared in an interview with a popular magazine, it was a touching moment that she will never forget and cherish.

Smallest accomplishments are major victories

Didi has also explained how being a parent to an autistic child is like living in a parallel universe, where even the smallest accomplishments are major victories. She emphasizes on the importance of showing oneself compassion and recognizing personal growth over time, especially when faced with challenging circumstances such as raising an autistic child.

At Nevada Autism, we are deeply moved and motivated by the strength and perseverance of parents like Didi, who are dedicated to their lives no matter how difficult it may be. Raising a child with autism requires immense love, patience and understanding. It also requires a strong support system from family and friends.
