The goal of public schooling is to provide all children with equal access to educational opportunities, but as you can imagine, it’s extremely difficult to provide equal levels of care to children with varying needs. This is especially true in recent years where funding has been waning, support for public education has been declining, and widespread teacher shortages are impacting schools everywhere.

Individualized educational plans help educators create customized learning plans for students who need it most. These students are often, but not always, struggling with certain learning disabilities, medical conditions, or unique circumstances that require a little extra help from educators.

In Clark County, statistics from 2020 revealed that over 40,020 students were on individualized education plans. Overall, that amounted to about 12.5% of all students. Among all the students in the Clark County School District, at least 16% were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

One thing that’s impacting Clark County’s ability to provide equal access to educational care to all their students is legal restrictions regarding ABA care in classrooms. ABA, or applied behavioral analysis therapy, is a scientific model that seeks to improve socially important behaviors through specific methods of behavior analysis. In Clark County, outside healthcare professionals are not legally allowed to provide ABA services inside classrooms. These restrictions can pose challenges for parents, but it shouldn’t discourage them from seeking out extra care for their children outside of school hours.

Recent statistics reveal that autistic students who undergo specific ABA therapy have over an 89% success rate. Even better, many students only need about two to three hours of ABA therapy a week to start seeing results in achievement, independence, and overall skill level.

Since these services aren’t available inside the classroom, parents in Clark County should consider supplementing this ABA therapy outside of school.
