The issue of prohibiting cell phones in classrooms has sparked a lot of discussion and differing opinions lately. The argument is split between those who think banning cell phones would restrict students from communicating and those who see phones as distractions. However, the Clark County School District (CCSD) has opted for an approach that takes into account both perspectives.
CCSD cellphone Policy
They have implemented a policy that allows students in grades 6-12 to possess cell phones, but they must be kept in non-locking, signal-blocking pouches during class. This decision has been met with mixed reactions from students, but it has been supported by Boys Town Nevada’s executive director, John Etzell.
Etzell clarifies that this rule is designed to boost student engagement and decrease distractions caused by cell phones. Furthermore, it will help students who have concentration challenges, such as those diagnosed with ADHD or autism.
Benefits of the cellphone policy for ASD children
Children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, for example, may benefit significantly from this policy, as it can help reduce sensory overload and promote a more structured learning environment. It also allows for flexibility since most ASD students often struggle with a fixation on particular objects, such as a game on a classmate’s phone.
In addition to the new changes, one non-profit organization, Boys Town Nevada, has taken the initiative to support these students by guiding them in adapting to the new rules and regulations in the classroom.
Boys Town Nevada is directly working with students’ skills in the classroom.
According to the program director, Etzell, they understand that student behavior is a significant factor in teacher retention, so they are dedicated to directly working with students and improving their social skills in the classroom.
They also assist educators in handling challenges in their classrooms, using methods like positive reinforcement and establishing routines for consistency while crafting personalized behavior plans to improve classroom participation and involvement.
Your Life Your Voice App
For those who may not be aware, Boys Town Nevada has recently introduced an app called “Your Life Your Voice ” designed to focus on people’s well-being in a secure and caring environment where they can share their emotions and find guidance while accessing important mental health tools and resources, like mood tracking, personalized journal entries with detailed mood reports and direct crisis counseling services.
Autism Support and Treatment in Las Vegas
Besides the assistance offered by Boys Town Nevada for students with needs, education enhancement efforts in Nevada are also supported by organizations. In particular, we at Nevada Autism are committed to increasing autism awareness and delivering high-quality Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy to those with autism spectrum disorder.
The aim is to empower these individuals with life skills for achievement in academics, employment, and community life.
