The Family Education and Treatment (F.E.A.T.) organization in Southern Nevada has teamed up with Sport-Social to host the annual “A Games” event. Aimed at individuals on the autism spectrum, this event offers modified versions of popular X-game activities to promote inclusive participation. Participants have the opportunity to choose two out of eight events, which include rock climbing, obstacle courses, skating, and biking.
So, instead of being limited to the traditional X Games format, the A Games caters to individuals with unique abilities and celebrates their participation in sports and physical activities.
Bringing a Sense of community
F.E.A.T. of Southern Nevada Executive Director Jennifer Strobel expressed her excitement for the event, which has been planned for over ten months and involves the support of over 100 volunteers. With its establishment in 1996, F.E.A.T. has been continuously working towards promoting inclusivity and creating opportunities for individuals on the autism spectrum. The A Games is just one of the many initiatives taken by F.E.A.T. to foster a sense of community and promote physical and social development for individuals with unique abilities.
Strobel explains the motivation behind this event, stating that after years of doing galas as a fundraiser, they were looking for something more immersive and engaging. This led to the idea of incorporating families and children, resulting in a fun-filled event with activities like face painting and mascot meet-and-greets. Furthermore, 40 different resource providers also participated in the event, offering support and services for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.
Goal for F.E.A.T.
The ultimate goal for F.E.A.T. is to assist and empower these families by providing them with the necessary tools and resources, making their journey a bit more manageable in the fight for services and support. As Strobel aptly stated, raising children can be challenging, but raising children with special needs presents an even greater challenge. F.E.A.T. recognizes this struggle and strives to make a positive impact by easing the burden and providing much-needed assistance.
